Gundam vs Gundam - PSP Review

Latest Gundam related games like Gundam Seed: Battle Tactics Rengou against ZAFT Portable, Gundam and Gundam Battle Royale were all great games, especially the Gundam Seed: Rengou against ZAFT Portable with the latest Mobile Suit Gundam Seed series. Gundam vs Gundam, the new Gundam game released for the PlayStation Portable in Japan (no date for release in North America yet). And 'this is worth buying at all? Read on .....

For those who did not play games or even heard of Gundam before, are basically transformers but only look 100x better. The games mentioned above are put into practice in a mobile suit, Gundam is not necessary because there are different series robots. You will control and the fight against one of the other sides, usually two sides each with different mobile suits and mobile armor (these robots are not required but may be fighter jets, etc.). It 's really a third-person shooter, just replace human / monsters with robots.

If I remember correctly, this game was from the porch and was brought to the PlayStation 2, then the PSP. Gundam Seed: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. Portable is a great game that has provided hours of gameplay and replay value is great because you can update the statistics of many of your mobile suit 'as how fast the weapon can fire more ammunition, more firepower as well as more health, jump higher at the top and greater power amplifier, etc. This is the level more or less correction, however, that I think it was necessary to overcome some of the more difficult levels.

Game
Gundam vs. Gundam is really just the arcade version brought to the PSP. At first I thought there was a story mode like Gundam Seed: Rengou against ZAFT Portable. I figured that out from the name of the game, stupid me. The controls are basically the same or very similar to other games though - jump, boost, shoot, melee, shoot two shot special, special mixes and special. The three special are difficult to perform, because you have to triangle, or the shoot or melee. The special move is slightly easier, and its done by pressing triangle, square and cross (could also press the right thumb on all four buttons)

I still have to perform even one of them. How did I also understand how hard to do these moves? They are actually mentioned in one of gaming options. I will update once you figure out how to perform them. I never got over the frustration as special moves from previous Gundam games.

[Update: I've said to perform special attacks (only when your special tool is full) pressing ..... most of the buttons]

In addition to the rules, you can now assign orders to your teammate computer commands like attack, dodge and surprise attack. You can also call to support additional housing where a mobile for a second and throw in a couple of more rounds to your current objective, as always, support requests can be recharged with time, just like the charge of ammunition for the rifle. I find the support useful because if I remember correctly he was able to take the results to me and act as bait for a short period.

Enough with the controls, the game has three game modes in "normal" (I call it the normal way, was about to tell the story mode, but its not a story) in which you fight through 8 stages, with 'last stop as a stage boss, quick play and multiplayer, which supports 2 on 2 battles. I think the 2 on 2 is the selling point here, just like the arcade version, the fun is shooting and cutting other men dressed driven mobile. After selecting a mobile suit from the list with 20 + of them and more can be unlocked by completing the "normal". They range from the older 0079 series to the more recent series Gundam 00. The 'goal of any of these game modes is the same, you and your enemies, both have a life bar, you lose if your life bar reaches 0 at your side. When you and / or your teammate dies (the same goes for enemies), the amount of life your team loses is based on the mobile suit that you have chosen. The stronger the mobile suit, the highest points of its value, which means that when it blows up, your team loses an amount larger than life. So this means that its not always best to choose the strongest from the list. I chose my favorite Freedom Gundam and its worth 3000GP, I lost one of the games once with death only twice!

In "normal" mode, you fight in random places and you will have a casual dress laptop to fight alongside with you. There are a total of 8 stages, with the last phase is the boss. The boss is huge compared to your mobile suit and it took me 2 tries to beat, hit me was a way to lose the game for the second time! I think I just need to practice more with the controls, a training mode would be a perfect game mode for this game.

Quick Play is child's play, choose your mobile suit and pick up to 3 computers to fight with or against you. You can change the options as to how long the match lasts, how fast your special gauge is full, or different stages / music.

Unfortunately I have not had the chance to try the multiplayer.

So as you can see, there is no grind here. Even if you can still unlock more mobile costumes, movie intro, and the final images for multimedia galleries.

Graphics and Audio
The graphics are once again, the quality of the PSP, mobile suits are well detailed, the environments are simple but the game is so fast you will not have time to appreciate or to pay attention, not that there's something to appreciate here. The music is actually real soundtrack of the series Gundam, so depending on which Gundam series 'phase are fighting in, you will be listening to that series' soundtrack. The soundtracks bring back a lot of memories for the road.

Final Verdict
Overall I think this game is OK. I still prefer Gundam Seed: Rengou vs. ZAFT Portable because it has a story mode and level of adjustment, although you can still unlock more mobile habits, maybe its just me. For those who are looking for fast arcade-style game, Gundam vs. Gundam should suit your needs. Skills really matter in this game because there is no level grinding where you can easily overwhelm the enemy to turn the mobile suit and weapons. If you have a lot of friends who love Gundam on PSP, I suggest you get them to get a copy so that up to 4 of you and your friends can battle each other at any time without going to the arcade.

7.0/10
